16 verses, two stories. Walking in the desert the people had not water to quench their thrust, and upped their complaint to Moshe, who rushed to God fearful of the rage of the people, imagining being stoned… God instructed him to use his staff, loaded with miracles against Pharaoh, and hit the rock. Water fountained off, and the crisis was resolved. Later the Amaleks approached. Moshe instructed Yehoshua to gather fighters to go to war, and he himself positioned on a hill top, raised his arms to give the battle priority to Yehoshua, but when he let his arms down (fatigue), the Amalekites prevailed. So Aron ad Hur ended up supporting Moshe's arms in the high, and Yehoshua leaked Amalek. Moshe erected an alter to commemorate the occasion.
