For forty years Israel wandered in the desert. They were fed daily, morning and evening. Bread at the beginning of the day -- it was called "mann", and protein at night fall -- a wild turkey ("slav") flew low, and was readily captured. God bade Israel to collect daily per their consumption. When they hoarded, the leftover became rotten. Except on Friday when the left over remained edible throughout the Shabbat.
